*watches Jon Stewart’s comments on Ferguson* hey look it’s a white man getting heaps of credit and adulation for saying the exact same shit that black people have been saying for weeks now. how unexpected.

WHITE SAVIOR! WHITE SAVIOR! bow down……*side eye*

I have mixed feelings about commentary like this because yes I agree that it’s problematic for white people to receive more credit and praise for things black people have been saying for years. But I also think it is necessary to have white figures with primarily white audiences to critique whiteness and white supremacy. Because whenever white people ask what they can do to help, I say, educate your people.

^^

plus he reaches millions whereas twitter/tumblr people reach only a few thousand

this is true and i don’t think Jon has ever tried to claim that what he is sayin are his own ideas unlike Tim Wise

Jon Stewart has referenced and hinted at several times that his commentary on race isn’t new. The whole point of the satire is that he points out (through inflection, not words directly) that “hey, Black people have been dealing with this shit for years, maybe you guys should get a fucking clue!”

Jon Stewart actually does satire properly in that the social commentary isn’t overstated. Through inflection and clever words, he accomplishes exactly what we want him to. He never claimed that his commentary was new, but his inflection implies that this should be common fucking sense to white people and that the events in Ferguson aren’t the first instance of police brutality or militarized police in America.

Those of you getting miffed should probably decide:

Do you wanna be the one to educate white people?

Or do you want white people to learn and educate themselves?

I know there’s a huge problem with white folks thieving WOC on here and using their work for profit, but in the instances where that doesn’t happen, I think some of you are just mad because your blog didn’t end up on Buzzfeed.
